It sounds so simple, but it’s not as easy as it sounds:
How to decorate a wall?!
Wall decoration is crucial to make your home feel like a home! I remember when I first started playing The Sims. I’d spend hours on making the house feel cozy and nice. But as soon as I’d put up the walls it would just look empty and feel incomplete.
Because I always forgot to put on wall decor!
I’d just put the walls back down, continue playing and completely ignore the issue. I was such a problem-solver as a kid. Loved confrontation. Such an inspiration.
Luckily now that I’m a grown-up (am I though?) and live in my own house, I know how to decorate the walls. My beautiful feature wall is actually the highlight of my living room now! Let me share my walls with you..
How to decorate a wall to look cozy
In my home, cozy is the keyword. I want everything to look cute, warm and welcoming. Lots of neutrals with a few subtle pops of color.
That’s what I wanted on my walls as well, to complete the picture. Cute neutrals with little pops of color.
With wall decoration it’s important to keep a few things in mind:
- Interior style
- Color palette
- Arrangement
Interior style
Since wall decor is a very broad term, in can include everything! Anything from frames, to shelves, to lamps, to tapestries, to flower pots. Heck, I’ve even seen bicycles hung from the wall before!
That’s why it’s important to keep your interior style in mind. My personal style is mostly a mix between subtle bohemian and Scandinavian. Lots of white, light wood, neutral earthy tones and lots of natural light.
So I would never hang, for example, a super futuristic clock on the wall. It doesn’t fit my theme, doesn’t match the vibe. It would look out of place!
Color palette
Keep in mind the color palette of your interior style and try to match your wall decorations. But at the same time, keep it interesting.
As I mentioned before, my interior heavily leans on neutrals, whites and light woods. That’s why I chose my wall decor the contain the same shades mostly. But with a few pops of color here and there. To keep things interesting!
Most of the posters I’m about to show you are neutral colored. But a couple of small ones show a blue sky or some subtle greenery. This brings some color into my home without looking out of place.
Arrangement
And lastly, the arrangement. The different wall decorations on all four (or more) walls of a room should all compliment each other in terms of placement. Don’t fill up one whole wall and keep the others empty. Instead, make a cute and playful arrangement.
This part gets especially fun when you are creating a feature wall.

How to create a frame wall?
A frame wall (or feature wall) is an arrangement of wall decor all put together in a playful manner. Mostly framed posters, but you can add anything to the mix, from mirrors to tapestries!
My frame walls features frames and posters from Desenio. They sell the most amazing collection of countless posters and fitting frames.
I am not kidding when I tell you that it took me days, if not weeks, to make a final decision. I had a lot of posters in mind that I thought were beautiful, and I kept playing around with placement, sizing and different pairings, trying everything out in Photoshop. Desenio have a fun tool on their website that you can use to do this, but I am stubborn and I wanted to move things around myself in Photoshop.
I wanted to include different sizes, without having it look messy. So I chose to go for two different sizes in the end. And the trick is to just keep playing around with placements until you’re happy. It doesn’t have to look perfect.
In case you’re interested in my picks, these are the names and sized of the posters on my frame wall:
- Amalfi Cityscape (30×40)
- Sand Slipping Through (30×40)
- In the Reeds No2 (50×70)
- Beach Huts (30×40)
- Blush (30×40)
- Eucalyptus Twigs No1 (50×70)

Decorating a frame shelf
Another super fun way of decorating your wall is by hanging a frame shelf.
This can be an ordinary shelf, or a special one that is meant for frames and decorations. These are a lot less deep in size, so they don’t stick out as much.
I chose to add some more Desenio framed posters to my living room wall by putting them on a frame shelf. The fun thing about this is the fact that you can change things around endlessly, because the frames aren’t attached to your wall.
You can mix your frames with tiny plant pots, books or magazines standing up, plates standing up, candles and more.
I even put a mirror on the shelf, to play around with shapes a bit.
There are the posters that are currently on my shelf:
- Beauty in Nature (30×40)
- Dry Reeds No1 (21×30)
- Curious Alpaca (30×40)

great idea. Personally I like the paintings to be more dramatic or a little more prominent. Because it will stand out more on the white wall.
I really appreciate how you emphasized the importance of the overall interior design before choosing the decor. Considering the style, color scheme, and layout truly helps the wall decor look ‘seamless’ with the overall space.
